"Hoop Drills for Skills Basketball Camps provide kids with an opportunity to make notable improvements in their basketball skills in a targeted, competitive, and fundamentally sound environment. These exciting fun filled camps use challenging basketball drills to identify players’ weaknesses, while strengthening existing abilities. Some of us will never be big, but it’s how hard you play and sometimes it’s the opportunity that you get. I dreamed of playing in the NBA, against such players as Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Wilt Chamberlain, and I got the chance to fulfill my dream when I was drafted into the NBA. It was great. And it was it was all because I got an opportunity, Hoop Drills for Skills Basketball camps give kids a great opportunity."

Robert Worthington

Robert Worthington was born in a military hospital in the small southern military town of Hinesville Georgia. Robert was the second child of a young teenage mother from Augusta, Georgia and a United States Army drill sergeant father born in Louisville, Kentucky.

Robert and his siblings learned early in life that, to overcome adversity, they had to work together. This was a discipline they developed as a result of living a military family life. These early life lessons would serve him well as he began to develop his basketball coaching philosophy years later.

After spending his early and middle childhood years in the military community, Robert’s family relocated to Orlando, Florida. Robert’s adolescence years would see him excel in multiple sports and develop an intense passion for the game of basketball. By his senior year in high school, he would be selected as one of the top basketball players in Central Florida. As a result, he received several college scholarship offers.

Robert is a graduate of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he earned his Bachelor of Science (BS) in Professional Aeronautics. He spent more than a decade in the United States Air Force (USAF) and ultimately earned his Master’s In Business Administration (MBA) from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.

Continuing his basketball career overseas, Robert played for a number of teams throughout Germany, England, Spain, and Guam. After returning to the United States,
he turned his attention to coaching and accepted an offer to be an assistant women’s basketball coach at Brevard Community College (BCC) in Melbourne, Florida. Robert’s tenure at BCC eventually led to a position with the BCC men’s basketball team, where he helped coach the team to one of the best season’s in school history. With his assistance, the team completed the first undefeated season in Southern Conference history; won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Basketball State Championship, and participated in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament – finishing the year with a Top 10 National Ranking.

Robert’s coaching career took another significant step when he was hired to coach in the United States Basketball League (USBL), a professional men’s spring basketball league. The USBL quickly became known around the country as a “professional basketball development league” for thousands of players. Many of the league’s players went on to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and professional leagues in Europe. Robert spent his first two years as a “Pro Coach”, working as head assistant to NBA Legend and Hall of Fame member Nate “Tiny” Archibald. Robert would later become the team’s head coach in his second year. He would return for a final year with the team, now as the assistant head coach for former NBA draft pick Brian Rowsom.

Coach Worthington’s passion for basketball led him to become a basketball trainer. In 2014 he launched Hoop Drills for Skills Basketball Camps LLC (HDFS), a youth training and fitness company. The HDFS Company affords Robert the opportunity to share his wealth of knowledge and devotion for the game. Though the company, he is empowered to share his experiences in a way that inspires, as well as informs basketball players of all ages and skill levels. Through his basketball camps and healthy kids’ fitness programs, Robert currently shares his expertise in schools, community centers, and military youth centers, explaining some of the complexities of the game of basketball, and developing fundamental skills. Today, Hoop Drills for Skills Basketball Camps works with hundreds of children around the county. Robert lives in Howard County Maryland with his wife and two young daughters.
